Starship Atrium Infill Build Project
There is an exciting build underway at Starship Hospital where Levels 2 and 3 of the atrium are filled with a new day stay and public spaces.
This follows the earlier stage of the build in our Paediatric ICU that accommodated an increased number of HDU and ICU cots. Building works will be fully completed by February 2026.
We have been creating a purpose-built expanded PICU area, new day stay and whānau areas inspired by te taiao (nature) of Aotearoa. The new whānau rooms will be equipped with kai room and more facilities to make your visits easier.
What does that mean for you and your tamariki coming to Starship?
Building works are happening in the main atrium of Starship on Level 2 and 3, as new areas are built to make space for the whānau rooms, including new office spaces. This also means that there will be some changes to other areas around the atrium.
New routes
These include:
A new entrance way to Starship on Level 2 (near the Children's Emergency Department). All other entrances will stay the same.
The Level 2 atrium will be closed
The Level 3 atrium bridge has re-opened and we now have a much larger food and beverage offering
We know coming to Starship can be a stressful time for you and your tamariki, so we want to make it as easy for you as possible. Don't worry - there will be plenty of signs and information around Starship to help you find your way.
And of course, you can always ask one of our helpful volunteers who you can find at the Level 1 and 2 entrances of Starship during normal daytime hours.
Opening of Huhu Grub
We are delighted to announce the opening of Huhu Grub - a cosy space for families and staff to rest and recharge.
Previously known as Tiny Bites, the brand new space offers coffee, fresh food, and treats daily from 7 am - 5 pm.

What's on the move
Current PICU whānau rooms will move from Level 2 Atrium to Level 3 rooms near the Outpatients reception area
Radio Lollipop will move, but it will still be operating until their new space opens in January 2026.
Thank you for your patience during this time. We suggest you try to arrive early to your appointment, just to give yourself extra time to find your way.
We will keep you updated on any further changes that might impact your visit so check back in before your next visit!
