Starship Patients Get Taste For Life

Thanks to Starship Foundation Five Star Sponsor New World a group of young Starship patients, who have a rare genetic condition called PKU, enjoyed a fanatstic cooking workshop with New World's Backyard Cook Marty Shanahan.   Marty collaborated with Starship's metabolic nutritional specialists to create receipes which were suitable for PKU patients who must follow a strict very low protein diet to avoid severe nerological damage.

New World has donated $30,000, in addition to their annual sponsorship, to support food related initatives at Starship. This funding will help expand the tube weaning trial and pilot a Starship multi-disciplinary clinic for children with food related issues; these include failure to thrive, tube weaning and children with medical conditions (such as PKU) that requrie very restrictive diets.

Every week New World provides Starship parents with fresh fruit on all wards and help fund our play therapists to run cooking classes for Starship's young in-patients.
