Admission to an inpatient bed from CED is usually appropriate for General Paediatric patients without review of the patient in CED by a representative of the General Paediatric team (eg registrar or consultant).

Direct Admission is available for suitable General Paediatric patients 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.

All of the following criteria must be fulfilled

1 The patient is clinically stable
2 Representative of General Paediatric team (Consultant, Registrar or House Officer) must be able to review the patient on the ward within 2 hours of transfer from CED to an inpatient bed.
3 Patient is from ADHB or not suitable for transfer
4 Patient has been reviewed by the CED Registrar or Senior, has a plan for (at least) the next 6 hours documented on page 4 of the CED Assessment record.
5 Page 4 of the CED Assessment record has been completed
6 Medication and fluid charts have been completed
7 General Paediatric registrar has been contacted directly, has accepted the admission, has agreed with the admission plan and has been informed of the planned location for the admission (ward and bed space).

See the General Paediatrics Admit Checklist that can be printed and completed prior to transfer to ward.

Once the patient is on the inpatient ward the patient is the responsibility of the General Paediatric service.

The General Paediatric service should be contacted in the usual manner if there are clinical concerns identified.
