National Travel Assistance

The National Travel Assistance Scheme provides financial assistance to people who are referred by their specialist to another specialist and need to travel long distances or travel frequently.

If your local specialist (not your doctor or GP) has referred your child to a specialist at Starship, you may be entitled to financial assistance towards your travel and, possibly, your accommodation costs. Your specialist will need to approve accommodation and any specialised transport needs.

Transport and accommodation assistance relates to the patient (child) and one support person (a parent or caregiver).

There is a Ministry of Health pamphlet which sets out the eligibility criteria for the scheme and explains how to go about making a claim. For further information, see the Ministry of Health website.

Alternatively, you can contact the Patient Travel Coordinator at Starship:
Phone (64 9) 307 4949 (ext 23903) - 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday
Outside of these hours, please contact the Starship Duty Managers on locator 93 5581.

The Patient Travel Coordinator is based at the 24 hour centre, Level Five, Auckland City Hospital. The address for mail is Auckland Hospital, Private Bag 92024, Auckland.
