Redevelopment at Starship
At Starship we are working hard to upgrade our facilities to provide a better environment for you and your child. Find out whether these changes will affect your visit to Starship.
Starship Children's Hospital is undergoing some major facility upgrades. Four significant projects will be starting over the next four months as part of the ongoing patient focussed refurbishment of the hospital.
These projects are on:
- Level 1 - installations in the paediatric Cath Lab
- Level 2 - the replacement of all 3 patient lifts
- Level 3 - renovations to the waiting room and clinic rooms in Outpatients
- Level 5 - the refurbishment of the Wards
Starship Lift Upgrade
From 17 October 2016, the lifts at Starship will be upgraded. This means one lift will be out of action at any time. This is a significant piece of work and is expected to take a number of months. For safety purposes, this also means that a large part of the Level 3 atrium will be out of use while the upgrade takes place.
Level 5 Refurbishment - Wards 25AB
Starship's General Paediatric wards on level 5, 25AB, have not been upgraded since the hospital was first opened in 1991. Starship Level 5 refurbishment will transform tired old wards into a fantastic new space which is light and fresh. A new design has been developed in conjunction with feedback from young patients, their families and staff; to create an environment which optimises recovery and well-being. Read more about the project and how you can help here.
On Tuesday, 15 November the refurbishment of Level 5 began. This project will carry through to May 2017. Here are the changes you can expect over this period:
- Day Stay Unit will be in Ward 31 East
- Ward 26A Intensive Observation Area patients will be cared for in the High Dependency Unit on Level 2
- Ward 25AB on Level 5, patients will be in Day Stay Level 2
If you have a planned admission to Day Stay, you will receive a letter telling you where you need to go as well as a map showing you the route to Ward 31. You can view the temporary 'Welcome to Ward 31 Day Stay' leaflet here for more information.
There will be signage placed around the hospital showing the changes and how to get to your destination. See our maps showing you how to find your way from Carpark B to Ward 31, and how to find your way from Operating Theatres to Ward 31. There are two Information Desks at Starship where you can ask for directions if you are not sure where to go, as well as our friendly 'blue coat' ambassadors.
Upgrade to Starship Outpatients area
From mid December, the Starship Outpatient reception area will be refurbished to provide a modern and more family-friendly space for people coming to the outpatient clinics at Starship. Air conditioning will also be installed in the north facing clinic rooms.
To allow work to commence, the outpatients reception will move into the Family Information Centre (directly opposite the current reception area on Level 3) and alternative seating will be provided for families to wait. The Family Information Centre will close during this period.
We would like to reassure you that all steps have been taken to ensure your safety and care during these refurbishments. At times there may be some building noise for short periods during different stages of construction of the new ward on Level 5. Please let us know if the noise is worrying your child.
