Our Child Protection service is seeking a Consultant Paediatrician or a Medical Officer for a fixed term contract to cover a nine-month period of sabbatical leave, from 30 March 2020.

This is a 0.8 FTE position, working Monday – Friday, plus 1 in 6 on-call duties in child protection.

Te Puaruruhau is an internationally-recognised centre of excellence in multi-disciplinary health-based child protection practice. We are co-located with the ADHB Family Violence Team, “Power to Protect” (the National Shaken Baby Prevention Program), Police and Oranga Tamariki in Puawaitahi, a unique multi-agency service across the road from Starship Children’s Health at 99 Grafton Road, central Auckland. In Puawaitahi, all three agencies seek to work together to address the child protection needs of New Zealand’s most vulnerable children and young people and their families.

We are seeking a Consultant Paediatrician or Medical Officer to assist in the provision of a comprehensive range of health-based child protection services, including acute inpatient and outpatient assessments, services to children and young people in care (Gateway assessments), participation in Family Group Conferences and legal proceedings, after-hours call, peer review, teaching, quality-improvement and research.

The successful applicant will have a rare opportunity to contribute and gain experience and expertise in a broad range of child protection practice and become familiar with close collaboration with Oranga Tamariki and the Police. Training and skilled supervision are provided in a dynamic, experienced and highly supportive multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team.

Although child protection experience would be an advantage, this role could be filled by any consultant paediatrician or senior advanced trainee in paediatrics who wants to make a difference, has a desire to gain expertise in the field of child protection and a willingness to learn.

To be successful, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand, and have sufficient training and experience in paediatrics to function at or above the level of an Advanced Trainee in General Paediatrics.
