Starship Level 5 Refurbishment
Level 5 of Starship is in urgent need of an upgrade
Starship's two wards on level 5, wards 25A and B, have not been upgraded since the hospital was first opened in 1991. The tired decor and outdated layout no longer match how contemporary clinical care is delivered, making an urgent refurbishment a priority.
Wards 25A and B are Starship's General Paediatric wards admitting over 3,000 children per year, some with the most complex medical conditions. Level 5 is also home to Starship's inpatient eating disorder service. Starship wants to create a better space for these children, young people and their families while they are receiving hospital care.
Starship Level 5 rebuild will transform tired old wards into a fantastic new space which is light and fresh. A new design is being developed in conjunction with feedback from young patients, their families and staff; to create an environment which optimises a child's recovery and well-being.
Starship Foundation is currently fundraising for this project to help meet the costs of refurbishment; ensuring level 5 is brought up to the standard of other recently remodelled wards and the newly completed operating rooms.
The rebuild will take place during late 2016/17 and Starship needs to raise over $4.5 million to contribute to this refurbishment.
Starship staff kick-start the fundraising
To help get the fundraising efforts off to a start, several Starship staff members from level 5 ran the 2015 ASB Auckland Marathon. Paediatrician Greg Williams was one of the runners who raised nearly $7,000 towards the refurbishment.
It is a privilege to work with the children and families who receive care through Starship, care made so much better through the fantastic support of the Starship Foundation.Greg Williams, Paediatrician

How might this affect patients and families coming to Starship?
