Feeding guideline for FORMULA FED infant admitted with congestive heart failure with minimal weight gain

Expected Weight Change and Growth

Expected post natal weight loss1

Term Infant      < 10%
Preterm            < 15%
Birthweight is usually regained by 2 weeks of age in term infants

Expected weight gains for preterm infants

Good growth for preterm babies is 15 - 20 g per kg body weight per day.
As they approach 40 weeks gestational age weight gain will slow to 150 to 200 g per week.

4 to 6 months 20 - 25g/day 150 g
7 to 9 months 15 - 20 g/day 100 g
10  to 12 months 7 -12g/day 50 - 75 g

Expected increase in length during the first year of life:  25 cm
