The following contain recommendations for the prevention of infection in Hyposplenic/Splenectomised patients

Immunisation

See immunisation guidelines

Antiobiotic Prophylaxis

Amoxicillin 20 mg/kg once daily OR 
Penicillin VK  125 mg b.d. (< 5yr) OR 250 mg b.d.(> 5yr). 
Strongly recommended for all asplenic children under 5 and for at least 1 year after splenectomy.  
Home emergency dose of amoxicillin should be prescribed if any delay in accessing medical care is possible.

Patient and Family Education

  • Signs and symptoms of sepsis
  • Importance of immunisation and antibiotic prophylaxis, but risk of sepsis still present
  • Wallet card
  • Seek medical advice before travel
