Starship Children's Health Service

It really is an impressive looking building
Starship Children's Health Service provides a wide range of complex medical, surgical and mental health services for children and young people throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Services are provided in inpatient, outpatient, daystay and  community settings, including the Community Child Health and Disability Service, Safekids and Paediatric Home Care. Outpatient clinics for the Auckland region are conducted in Starship, Tamaki, West Auckland and the North Shore. Approximately 45 Outreach Clinics are provided by Medical Services in a variety of localities throughout the country. The paediatric specialty teams include nurse specialists who provide nursing expertise within each specialty.  Many other patients are treated in outreach services, both outpatient and day surgery. Starship specialists travel to other hospitals to provide outreach services.

Starship is a major teaching centre. It aims to lead the nation in paediatric training and research.

For the 2006/07 financial year, Starship treated approximately 94,004 patients, including:

22,609 Inpatient visits (including Day Stay patients)
29,101 Children’s emergency visits (of which 12,254 went on to be inpatient visits)
54,548 Outpatient visits

(TOTAL: 22,609 + 29,101– 12,254 + 54,548 = 94,004)

About Starship
It has been said the building looks like a spaceship or a cake!

The hospital was New Zealand's first hospital built exclusively for children and young people and their health needs. It is located on the Auckland City Hospital site, Park Road, Grafton, Auckland, New Zealand. Starship was opened on 18th November 1991. The name was chosen because of the design of the building and in the hope that children and young people would think of it as a less frightening place to go.

Starship's prime focus is on delivering family-centred care in a child friendly environment. Starship was designed to appeal to children and young people. It is built around a central atrium with a rainforest theme, a playground and natural light.

Each level is painted a different colour and each colour has a special meaning:
  • Aqua represents the Pacific Ocean
  • Orange represents the land
  • Blue is for the sky
  • Yellow represents the sunshine
  • Pink is for health
Starship has nine wards and a capacity of 186 beds when fully occupied.

Quality Achievements
We are always proud to receive our accreditation certificate

Starship is committed to quality care and service. Reflecting this, Starship first achieved accreditation with Quality Health New Zealand in 1997. Starship was reaccredited in 2006 and once again received a 3 year accreditation. Starship continues to focus on a continuum of care approach to patient care and safety.

Location

A perfect day for a sail
Situated in the heart of Auckland, the City of Sails, Starship is only five minutes drive from the Auckland waterfront.  Starship is bordered by the central business district, Newmarket and the Auckland Domain, a large reserve with the Auckland War Memorial Museum, wintergarden and a duck pond.

The entrance to the Domain
Some of the curtains were especially designed for Starship and have pictures of children playing, and well known scenes of Auckland such as the Auckland harbour bridge, the Domain, One Tree Hill and the yachts in the harbour.
