New Zealand citizens or those who have obtained permanent residence are entitled to publicly funded health care.

Non-residents may be required to pay for their health care. If you were not born in New Zealand and have not previously shown evidence of residency, you should bring your passport with you on your first visit to the hospital for verification.

You should show your passport to the Cashiers desk on Level 5 Auckland City Hospital next to the reception desk. This desk is staffed from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Ineligible children born in New Zealand will be charged for services from 1 July 2007. This means children born in New Zealand of parents who are not New Zealand citizens, are no longer automatically New Zealand citizens and they will be charged for care. Their parents or guardians are required to pay beforehand for elective (non-urgent) care and following treatment for acute (emergency) care.
