Starship Ward Accommodation

It is good to have family nearIt is important for a child to have a parent / caregiver stay in Starship with them whenever possible. It is not possible for parents / caregivers to stay overnight with a child in Intensive Care or High Dependency Units. Alternative accomodation is then provided either within Starship or nearby.

Overnight accommodation is available in the wards for one parent or caregiver only. This is due to space restrictions and the need for staff to be able to get to the patient for safety reasons. The nominated caregiver must be over the age of 16 and capable of looking after themselves.

A parent / caregiver staying with a child will be provided with a bed, chair or mattress depending on the space available. Shower and toilet facilities for parents / caregivers are available on every ward and a parent lounge and kitchen is available on some wards.

Ronald McDonald House Family Room

Ronald McDonald Family RoomThe Ronald McDonald House Family Room is located within Starship on level three. It is a large day room with a stunning view over the harbour and it provides 13 crisis care bedrooms for short term ‘emergency’ accommodation. This facility is also provided by, and funded by, the RMH Auckland Trust.

What does the Ronald McDonald House Family Room offer families with children in Starship ?

The Family Room is a place for a quiet break from the wards for parents, caregivers and siblings of patients.
  • Children have a dedicated space to play quietly with activities and toys
  • Patients are welcomed with their families when they are well enough to be out of their beds, off the ward and able to mix with other children
  • Families staying in Ronald McDonald House Auckland may meet their visitors here
  • Light snacks and tea and coffee are available during the day
Our Family Room on-site crisis accommodation is offered to parents whose children are in intensive care and high dependency units, when it is important to stay close by.

Light meals can be provided for families staying in our Family Room accommodation.

What can I do in the Family Room?

  • Take some quiet time out from the ward
  • Sit comfortably and read while your child is in surgery
  • Have a coffee, tea or light snack
  • Meet your visitors off the ward
  • Give your sick child’s brothers or sisters time out from the ward, when they are with you for extended periods
  • Once your child is back on their feet, you can take a quiet stroll together to the Family Room and have some respite in this peaceful space
Referral

The Charge Nurse on your ward will give you a referral card to the Family Room day lounge which is open from 8:00am to 7:00pm each day, seven days a week.

If you are staying in the Family Room crisis accommodation you can use the day lounge as your sitting room or for a ‘cuppa’ until 9:30pm each night (except Sundays when it closes at 7:00pm).

If you need an overnight stay as respite from the ward or even for a nap and hot shower during the day, ask your Charge Nurse for a referral. We may be able to arrange this service depending on our availabilities on the day.

If you have a need to stay on-site to be close to your child, your Social Worker, the after hours Duty Manager or the Charge Nurse on your unit will arrange your accommodation.

Ronald McDonald House Auckland

What is Ronald McDonald House Auckland?

Ronald McDonald House AucklandRonald McDonald House Auckland provides families of sick children, who are traveling to Starship for specialist treatment, accommodation and support for the duration of their stay in Auckland.

Where is Ronald McDonald House Auckland?
Ronald McDonald House Auckland is situated directly behind Starship on the Auckland City Hospital site.

What does Ronald McDonald House Auckland offer families of sick children?

We will be your ‘home away from home’. Being uprooted from your home, family and friends and jobs is stressful, especially when your child is facing a potentially life threatening illness. Here at Ronald McDonald House Auckland we help families to stay together during this time of crisis and we aim to help all families through their experience in the most positive way possible.

How do we register to stay there and what does it cost?

Ronald McDonald House Auckland accommodation and support services are offered free of charge to families traveling to Auckland with their sick child. Most often you will be referred to us by your Specialist and/or Social Worker in your local hospital. Sometimes you will be referred by Charge Nurses on Starship wards, Social Workers in Starship or the Duty Managers.

Who runs Ronald McDonald House Auckland and provides this service?

The RMH Auckland Trust, which is a 100 percent community-based charity, has provided the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room facilities and the funding to operate it. Partners in the RMHA Trust include:

  • Heart Children
  • Child Cancer Foundation & CanTeen
  • The Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland
  • Auckland District Health Board
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities (the philanthropic arm of McDonald’s in New Zealand)

The RMH Auckland Trust actively fundraises in the community and receives bequests, donations and grants to build, maintain and support its services. Eligible families attract a subsidy from the Ministry of Health which, although welcome and a major contributor to our operating budget, does not cover the full cost of their stay. Some families will never be eligible for a subsidy and the RMH Auckland Trust covers these costs entirely.

How many family members can stay at Ronald McDonald House Auckland and for how long?

Bedroom in Ronald McDonald House Auckland The House has 48 rooms, including four self contained units suitable for transplant families. There are single, double and family rooms. A family room is able to accommodate up to three adult family members or two adults and up to three children. At times demand outstrips our ability to accommodate all families in the House. This is especially the case for larger families. When this happens we will arrange for a suitable motel or apartment to be made available, at no cost to the family concerned. We aim to place families no further away than five minutes by car or a maximum 10 minutes by foot.

Families can stay with us as long as they are in Auckland and need to be close to a child receiving treatment in the hospital. For many families, treatment can be a weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or a six monthly regime, so we see them regularly throughout the year. Other families stay with us for periods during diagnosis or prior to surgery and during their children’s recuperation.

What else does Ronald McDonald House Auckland offer families?

Each week there is a wide range of family support services available including:
  • An onsite School, providing siblings and patients staying at the House access to core curriculum (mornings) and special activities or field trips (afternoons)
  • Regular supermarket shopping expeditions for essential supplies
  • Wednesday evening family dinners (all cooked by volunteers!)
  • Free weekly trips to the Auckland Zoo and Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World
  • Free entry to local Olympic pools
  • For the brothers and sisters staying in the House while their sibling is being treated, we have a range of activities including our Family Art Programme, Stretch & Grow classes and Radio Lollipop (weekly supervised fun and games for children). These programmes also offer parents the opportunity for some time out.

How can I show my appreciation of your services?

Many families ask this question when they get home and back on their feet. As the RMH Auckland Trust relies on community support to supplement grants from our key partners, any donation you can give is appreciated and is used to help us continue providing our services to families that suddenly find themselves with children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Many children, both those who were being treated and those that have stayed here while their brothers or sisters are being treated, have made Ronald McDonald House Auckland their focus for school fundraising projects.

Family members who may belong to service groups like Rotary or Lions also think of us when they are fundraising. However big or small, every donation is gratefully accepted and is used to ensure that Ronald McDonald House Auckland will be there for NZ families who someday may need to call our House their home.
