Atrium

This looks so realThis playground is in the atriumThe atrium is a large space in the centre of Starship, at level two.  The hospital holds events here such as concerts, visits from celebrities, launches of new services, openings of new departments and celebrations such as the annual Christmas party.

Look out for posters in the wards and lifts advertising what is on.

The atrium was refurbished in 2005. The new design involves a fantasy rain forest theme which includes recycled timber telegraph poles as 'trees', stepping stones, rocks, clouds, canopies and log benches.  There is also specially printed rain forest flooring and walls.

In the atrium is a playground that was designed and built by the team on the TV programme 'Aprils Angels" in 1998.

Koromiko Garden

Even beds can be wheeeled outsideThe garden is located on level three of
Starship. This outdoor area is for Starship
patients and their families to relax away
from the hospital wards. There is seating
and a grassed area. There are fairy tales
painted on the pillars.

This garden is Smokefree.

Pinball Machines

These are located on level three next to the doors out to the Koromiko Garden.

Play Rooms

So many toys and things to doThere is a playroom on each ward, in the Outpatients Department and in the Day Stay Unit. These playrooms are staffed by a play specialist and sometimes by volunteer assistants and children and siblings are welcome to visit and play. There are activities, games, dress ups and medical play equipment.

The play specialists are qualified teachers with a background in early childhood education and/or special needs. The play specialists will also bring activities, computers and games to a child's room.  If a child is going to have a blood test, a scan or an operation the play specialist can visit and talk about this.

Radio Lollipop

Radio Lollipop provides a play and radio programme in Starship on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm - 8:00pm and a special "Teen Beat" Thursday show for teenagers on Thursday nights.

Radio Lollipop volunteers visit the children in the wards and Day Stay Unit with games and entertainment and also take children to the studio area in the atrium on level two for extra activities such as table tennis. Parent consent is required before a Radio Lollipop volunteer can be alone with a child or take a child off the ward.

School

This classroom is great

The Northern Health School is located on level three.

The classroom is open between 9:00am and 3:00pm during the school terms. For children who are unable to come to the classroom, teachers are available to work on their ward between 9:00am and 3:00pm.

The school also operates in the Child and Family Unit on level one.

Teen Lounge

If you ask any teenager, they will usually say that being in hospital is really boring!!! At Starship there is a team of play specialists who are here to help children and young people cope with being in hospital. Sometimes this means explaining medical procedures in child or teenage language, and sometimes this means finding young people things to do to keep their minds off being in hospital.

The Teen Lounge is a place in the hospital where teenagers (over 12 years) can go to hang out, listen to music, play computer games or do whatever they want to do. The lounge has a stereo, Internet access, a Playstation, and cupboards full of games and activities to keep teens occupied. The lounge usually opens in the afternoon at 3:00pm  and is run by the adolescent play specialist. It is located on level five of Starship.

The play specialist is really into getting teenagers to produce art work to put up around the hospital and usually has some crazy project for teenagers to work on. If you look around the wards you might notice some large, colourful banners. These have been painted by young people in hospital and are heaps of fun to create – you don’t even have to be that artistic to have a go!!

So if you’re bored, want to get way from the babies or oldies or just want something to do - check out the Teen Lounge when you come to hospital. Just ask your nurse or you can contact the adolescent play specialist on locator 93 5114.

Look for this near the level 2 entrance
In November 2004 the artwork painted by the children of the Kelston Deaf Education Centre was unveiled at Starship.

The "Special Work of Art" project was a community project by staff, teachers and teacher aides. It was made possible by the generous contributions of time and resources of many sponsors, artists and photographers. The artwork of the children was gratefully received by Starship and is displayed in the level two atrium.
